How to Make Archery Target – Expert Guides

Archery is a common sport that is both enjoyed by kids and adults alike. It is because it is fun and it also could be used as an excuse to bond with family or friends. However, archery range arcades are not that cheap.

Some would also choose to stay home than drive to these arcades. However, archery can also be enjoyed in your own home’s confines, whether it be outside or inside. You only need to have a space to practice shooting arrows. You would also need your crossbow and arrow and, of course, archery targets.

Others might think that archery targets are hard to make, but they are very easy if you would follow the steps carefully.

How to Make Archery Target: DIY Guide

In making archery targets, you first need to decide which kind of archery target you will make. An archery target must be steady and thick enough to withstand the piercing arrows. For beginners, it is advisable to use a bag archery target.

In making bag archery targets, First, you must prepare the materials. You could use a reusable shopping bag or a black garbage bag, different colors of duct tape or paint, cardboard, and stuffing. For the stuffing, you can use anything laying around, whether foam, shrink wrap, old carpets, blankets, or old clothing.

Next, make the cardboard to the size of your bag. The cardboard will be the one that will shape your archery target, and it will also add to the thickness of your target. You can use old cardboard, but it must be sturdy because it gives the frame for your archery target. A wooden frame is also advisable, but because we are making a bag archery target, the cardboard will suffice.

Then, stuff the bag with your stuffing. It is much better if your stuffing is soft and absorbent. Hay is the best choice for the stuffing. Make sure that it is full and it will be steady. After, you can now shut your bag archery target shut.

Lastly, you can use your duct tape or paint to draw a target outside the bag. You can put a bulls-eye on the target, or you could put in your preference. Now, you have your bag archery target.

Disadvantages

The only disadvantage of bag archery targets is that they are not waterproof. They are advised to be used indoors, and in a dry spot, however, they could still be enjoyed if they are put outside on a sunny day. They are also advised to be used only once. Make sure to dispose of your bag archery targets properly.

You can also make wooden frame targets. They are more resolute and will last longer than bag archery targets. For wooden frame targets, make a wooden frame. You can decide on the width and height, but it is advisable not to go beyond three feet.

Cover the front and back opening with chicken wire and mesh. Then, put the stuffing inside. You can cover the target with some canvas or anything thick, so the stuffing will not fall off.

Lastly, you can draw or paint a bull’s eye on the target or anything you want.

It is much better to throw the bag archery targets after using them; however, with the wooden frame targets, you can replace the stuffing or mesh when you feel like they have already worn off. You could also repair your frame or repaint it if necessary.

Bottom Line

Archery targets are not that hard to do. As long as you have your own materials and a how-to guide, it will be easy, and it is also fun to do. They are also more efficient because you could put them in any part of your house and play archery any time you want.

It is also easy to carry so you could bring it during an outdoor picnic or a barbecue party with family or friends. You can also save bucks because you don’t want to go to archery ranges just to enjoy a round of archery. You can simply put the target anywhere and with pistol crossbows and arrows, you can now enjoy a fun but competitive game of archery with anyone.
